Introducing Solving Problems at SWS
We explore in this section true images of the buildings and landscape at the hub of SWS, which is the Evergreen Village (EV). EV is composed of approximately fifteen of SWS's 80 acres.
The still shots and videos show the challenges and progress made so far with the donated funds. In addition, at EV, you'll get a sense of the area's tranquillity as the sunlight breaks through the evergreen pine trees, presenting a sense of serenity and peacefulness.
Visitors have reported that it is often difficult to leave after staying a few days because of the quality of energy present at the site, specifically, and throughout the Siskiyou National Forest. For more spiritually-minded and empathic visitors, EV can be quite soothing to the mind and soul. One reason may be traced to its Native American Roots. The Takelma People called this region, "the land is the heart of the people."
The Native Roots in the Siskiyou Region of Oregon
A guiding sentiment and commonly cited perspective that reflects the Takelma (the native peoples of the southwest region of Oregon) view of the Siskiyou Forest and the Rogue River area is that the land is the heart of the people.
This belief system emphasizes a deep, reciprocal, and sacred connection to the region:
· "The Land is Our Heart": This phrase, often used to describe the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, reflects the belief that the mountains and forests are not just resources, but living entities essential to the life of the tribe.
· The World as a "Great Animal": In Takelma tradition, the Rogue River is described as the "lifeblood of the Great Animal that is the World," with specific landmarks like the Table Rocks acting as ribs and Crater Lake as the head, illustrating a profound, living, and sacred geography.
· Sacred Stewardship: The Takelma viewed the forest, salmon, and land as sacred, maintaining a balanced existence through sustainable practices such as controlled burning, which allowed them to live as "caretakers of this sacred land".
